Martyrdom in Christianity
Martyrdom is very different to Martyrdom in some other faiths. As it involves no violence towards others but instead is being killed for Christ.
The Christian Martyr won't actively seek to be Martyrdom as the term actually means bearing witness was not intended to lead to the death of the witness, although because of witnessing for Christ this can happen.
This still happens today in some countries around the world especially in the Middle East where persecution of certain faiths is very high.
The first Christian Martyr was St Stephen who was stoned to death. "While they were stoning him, Stephen prayed, 'Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.' Then he fell on his knees and cried out, 'Lord, do not hold this sin against them.' When he had said this, he fell asleep." (Acts 7:59-60)
In fact there is more persecution of Christians around the world than any other time in Christianity's history. Although such persecution usually inspires more people to follow Christ it is sad that such ignorance and cruelty still exists and is growing further.
However there are Christian organisations that try to help the persecuted Church one of these is Open doors.
However this is a constant struggle as not many people in the West realise the level persecution Christians around the world endure. But it is time people do as according to If one part suffers, every part suffers with it.." (1 Corinthians 12:26).
Therefore we should unite together and support our persecuted brothers and sisters around the world through joining charities like Open Doors, volunteering and praying for deliverance.
